JONESBORO, Ark. (3/5/07) – The Arkansas State baseball team resumes its 10-game home stand with a pair of mid-week games this week.
The Indians will take on Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday and will host Jackson State on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. for both games. ASU (5-6) is coming off a 3-1 week with a victory at Murray State and a series win over Bradley at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field. The Indians swept a doubleheader from the Braves on Saturday before dropping Sunday’s final game of the series. ASU is hitting .272 as a team with five players hitting over the .300 mark. Senior Josh Yates leads the club with a .429 average to go along with four doubles, one home run and seven RBI. Junior Ryan Hudgins leads the team with 10 runs scored and 9 RBI. Right-hander T.J. Brewer (1-1) leads the club with a 2.51 ERA. In three starts, Brewer has a team-high 19 strikeouts while giving up four earned runs in 14.1 innings. ASU has a 4.55 team ERA. ASU will send right-hander Tim Egart (1-0, 3.38 ERA) to the mound Tuesday against SEMO left-hander Asif Shah (1-0, 0.84 ERA). Egart has made five relief appearances for ASU with a win and a save. In eight innings, he has held opponents to a .226 average while striking out six. Shah has made three appearances for the Redhawks, including one start. The southpaw has struck out 11 in 10.2 innings while holding opponents to a .194 average. He also has a save. The Redhawks enter Tuesday’s contest at 6-2. They swept a two-game series from Cleveland State last weekend, and also won two of three games from both Jackson State and South Dakota State prior to that. Shah leads SEMO at the plate with a .333 average and the Redhawks are hitting just .229 as a team. SEMO sports a 2.86 team ERA. Jackson State has won seven straight games to enter the week with an 8-7 record. The Tigers will host Tougaloo on Tuesday afternoon before traveling to Jonesboro for Wednesday night’s game. ASU holds a 25-24 advantage in the all-time series against SEMO. The Indians won last year’s only game between the two schools, 4-3 in Jonesboro. Last year’s second game scheduled at Cape Girardeau, Mo., was canceled due to rain. Wednesday’s game will be the first ever meeting between ASU and JSU in baseball. |
