JONESBORO, Ark. (9/1/06) - Arkansas State's men's and women's cross country teams each finished fourth in Friday's ASU Invitational cross country meet at the course on the ASU campus.

Arkansas-Little Rock captured the women's team title with 27 points, followed by Ole Miss with 62, Central Arkansas came in third with 63, ASU had 81, Arkansas Tech was fifth with 107 and Christian Brothers had 138. For the men, Ole Miss was the winner with 34, UALR had 40, UCA 80, ASU finished with 98, and CBU had 109.

“Our women really came along,” said ASU head coach Jay Flanagan. “We'll get better as the season goes. I thought Toshia Bauer did a nice job and Stacy Papageorge ran very well in her first collegiate race. This group will run well as a bunch.”

Bauer, a junior from Tipton, Mich., finished ninth individually with a time of 16:37.18 over the 4,000-meter course. Papageorge followed at 12th with a time of 17:10.76. Veteran Candice James ran well at 15th in 17:26.91 and Janna Ferguson and Meghan Dean were 22nd and 23rd, respectively, with times of 18:11.34 and 18:24.76. Freshman Mary Edwards was 25th in 18:32.39.

The remaining ASU women finished from 39th to 46th.

“Our men are running thin,” continued Flanagan. “But, Brad Reach ran very well as did Nathan Mattox. Mike Miller got better at the end of the race and he ran a very good race for his first collegiate meet.”

Individually, Reach was eighth over the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21:20.00 and Mattox and Miller were 17th and 18th with respective times of 22:23.74 and 22:33.68. Sophomore Chris Pickle came in at 24:16.64 and Eddie McNeill ran a time of 28:21.78.

ASU's next meet is Sept. 15 at the Alabama Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
