ORLANDO, Fla. — “Red,” Arkansas State University’s spirit character, finished in second place at the 2006 College Nationals Mascot Championship here over the weekend.

“I was so excited when I learned that ‘Red’ finished second in the competition,” said Andrea Scott, ASU’s Director of Marketing and the person who originated and designed the character. “It is a wonderful honor for ‘Red’ and Arkansas State. The student who portrays ‘Red’ does an amazing job bringing the character to life. It’s great to see him rewarded for his efforts.”

“Red,” seeded third prior to the championship, was one of 10 mascots and spirit characters competing at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. Top-seeded “Aubie” from Auburn University was the winner. Entry was based on a written form and a two-minute highlight video.

This is fourth major honor for “Red.” The character won “the best mascot” competition at the Universal Cheerleader Association’s College Division camp at the University of Alabama. Red went on to finish third in the UCA’s preliminary competition last summer.
